Abstract
As part of the continuing review and development of non-discriminatory Library cataloguing practices, a review of literature was conducted to inform modern standards of description for protected characteristics and other areas of cultural sensitivity. This review was the first stage both in identifying the descriptive terms to be used by the Library, and in the development of a policy to govern the way that the Library is to manage its descriptive and interpretative practices over time.
The focus of the work extended beyond archival catalogue descriptions (new and existing), to catalogues of published records, the creation of contextual information (web features, etc.), and the management (review, contextualisation, etc.) of surrogates of original documents that may contain sensitive information.
